PORTION: 2 TABLESPOONS

Duckweed (Lemna minor) is a tiny, fast-growing floating plant that is ideal for aquariums and ponds. Known for its vibrant green color and small, oval-shaped leaves, Duckweed quickly forms a thick carpet-like cover on the water surface, adding a natural, lush look to your aquarium. Its rapid growth and ability to spread across the water column make it an excellent plant for improving water quality and providing shade for fish and invertebrates.

Duckweed is one of the easiest and most efficient plants to grow, making it perfect for beginners and aquarists looking for low-maintenance, highly effective aquatic plants. In addition to its aesthetic value, Duckweed offers numerous benefits, such as nutrient absorption, algae control, and providing shelter and food for small aquatic life. While it can be invasive in some tanks due to its fast growth, it can also be easily managed by regular thinning and removal.

Key Features:

- Fast-Growing and Efficient: Duckweed is one of the fastest-growing aquatic plants. It reproduces rapidly through vegetative growth, quickly covering the surface of your aquarium.
- Floating Plant: Duckweed floats freely on the water's surface, providing excellent coverage and creating a shaded area beneath the water, which can help reduce stress in fish and keep water temperatures more stable.
- Water Quality Improvement: Duckweed absorbs excess nutrients, including nitrates and phosphates, helping to reduce algae growth and improve water quality. It is an effective natural filtration plant.
- Fish and Invertebrate Shelter: The dense mat of Duckweed offers hiding places and shade for fish, shrimp, and other small invertebrates. It also provides a food source for herbivorous fish and other aquatic creatures.
- Low-Maintenance: Duckweed thrives without requiring any special care. It can grow in a variety of water conditions, from soft to moderately hard water, and in tanks with low to moderate light.

Benefits:

- Algae Control: By absorbing excess nutrients from the water, Duckweed helps limit algae growth, making it an effective tool in maintaining a clean and balanced aquarium.
- Water Oxygenation: As a photosynthetic plant, Duckweed produces oxygen during the day, which benefits the overall health of your aquarium's ecosystem.
- Stress Reduction for Fish: The shade created by Duckweed can reduce stress for fish, particularly those that prefer lower light levels or need refuge from more aggressive tank mates.
- Natural Food Source: Many species of fish, especially small herbivores, enjoy grazing on Duckweed. It also provides a valuable food source for snails and other invertebrates in the tank.
- Easy to Harvest & Manage: While it can grow rapidly and cover the entire surface of the aquarium, Duckweed is easily thinned and harvested to prevent overcrowding or to allow more light to reach the rest of the plants below.

Care Instructions:

- Lighting: Duckweed thrives in both low and moderate lighting, although it grows more slowly in low light. It can tolerate a wide range of light conditions, but moderate lighting will encourage faster growth.
- Water Conditions: Duckweed prefers slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) but can adapt to a wide range of water conditions. It grows best in temperatures between 68°F and 80°F (20°C–27°C). Duckweed is highly adaptable to both soft and moderately hard water.
- Substrate: As a floating plant, Duckweed does not require a substrate. It grows entirely on the water's surface and absorbs nutrients directly from the water column.
- CO2 & Fertilization: Duckweed does not require CO2 supplementation but can benefit from liquid fertilizers or aquarium supplements to provide nutrients for faster growth. In a tank with many other plants, Duckweed may compete for nutrients, but it is generally quite hardy and can thrive in a variety of nutrient levels.
- Maintenance: While Duckweed is low-maintenance, it requires regular thinning and removal to prevent overgrowth. It can quickly cover the entire surface of the tank, blocking light to other plants below. Simply scoop out excess Duckweed with a net or by hand to manage its growth. Regular harvesting will ensure it does not outcompete other plants or fish for space.

Applications:

- Freshwater aquariums (low-tech or high-tech)
- Pond aquariums and water gardens
- Shrimp tanks, breeding tanks, and fry tanks
- Natural filtration in aquariums with nutrient buildup
- Floating cover for creating shade or reducing algae

Note: Duckweed can grow very quickly under the right conditions, so it may need to be thinned regularly to prevent it from covering the entire surface of the water. In some tanks, it may need to be removed entirely if it is growing too fast or outcompeting other plants for light and nutrients. In smaller tanks, it can easily overwhelm the surface, so monitoring its growth is essential.

Duckweed is an incredibly useful and versatile aquatic plant that can significantly improve water quality, provide shelter and food for aquatic life, and add a natural, floating greenery to your aquarium. With its rapid growth, easy care, and ability to enhance the overall health of your aquarium, Duckweed is an excellent choice for aquariums of all sizes and setups. Just keep an eye on its growth to ensure it doesn’t become too invasive, and you'll enjoy the benefits of this simple yet effective plant in your tank.
