Discovered in the freshwater rivers of Thailand's Tha Chin River, these fully aquatic dwarf crabs are as rare and mystical as they are adorable. With their fuzzy legs and endearing shyness, they look like they scuttled straight out of a fairy tale and into your planted tank.
Only growing to about 0.4 inches (1 cm) in diameter, Thai Micro Crabs are one of the smallest crab species on the planet. Their delicate, see-through bodies are paired with hairy, filter-feeding appendages that make them look like they’re wearing little pom-poms! They're true scavengers and biofilm grazers, preferring to hang out in mossy hideaways or driftwood nooks, nibbling ever-so-gently on microscopic goodies.
These crabs are gentle, peaceful, and completely non-aggressive, making them the perfect roommate for shrimp, snails, and other tiny tankmates. They thrive in:
Heavily planted tanks with moss and soft cover
Low-flow waters to help them forage with ease
pH around 6.5–7.5, temp around 72–78°F
Semi-transparent bodies with natural grayish or olive hues
Whimsical, fuzzy legs that constantly comb through the water for food
A tendency to hide most of the time, but oh-so-worth it when they appear!
✅ One of the smallest and rarest freshwater inverts in the hobby
✅ Ideal for planted tanks, shrimp tanks, and biotope aquariums
✅ Fascinating behavior – like underwater foraging fluffballs!
✅ Safe for all peaceful tankmates – zero aggression, all charm
✅ Great conversation starter – “Wait, is that a crab?!”
Want to see your Thai Micro Crabs more often? Add clumps of Java moss or fine-leafed plants near the front of your tank—they love to hide close to food sources and will venture out more often if they feel safe! 🌱🦀
